Especially with the global economy, keeping track of exchange rates can be particularly important.

Living in Vietnam, I decided to start tracking the nation's currency to be better informed when making decisions, which these days can often need to be as soon as possible. A day or two later and things could have changed drastically.

Here is my currency exchange rate tracker for my currency of interest (VND) and the major currencies. This is updated daily whenever possible. The exchange rates were obtained using Google Sheet's googlefinance function.

Relative valuation of major currencies + VND over the past 30 days

The first tab is the global currency outlook + VND. You may often hear how certain currencies rise or fall, but it can be hard to decide without additional context. So I decided to create a normalised index that considers each currency's movements against the other currencies listed more holistically.

Sometimes a currency may move in tandem with most others, but significantly gain/lose against one of interest (VND in this case). That would be of particular interest to make a quick buy/sell decision.

The calculation here is very simple - each currency is normalised against the high point within the range (30 days), then for each time point, the average of the average and mean value across all currencies was taken to yield a holistically benchmarked value against the other currencies. Thus even if one currency significantly deviates in value on any given day, it would still have some, but not complete, influence on the valuation of the other currencies.

Movement of major currencies in relation to the VND over the past 30 days

The second tab shows the ratio between the current day's exchange rate between each foreign currency and the VND versus the value from 30 days ago.

This gives a good indicator of not only change over time, but the degree of change.

Movement of major currencies vs. VND YTD, benchmarked against 2024 average

The last tab is similar to the second, except it is benchmarked against the average exchange rate for 2024, rather than compared to 30 days ago, and is YTD.
